To start this off, this post was originally called "Meeting the President of Peru" when this was just something in my drafts so I'd remember to blog about it after it happened... but it didn't happen...That was a real bummer that all of us exchange students were all planning on meeting the president and super excited about it- but he just decided not to show up.
Even though we didn't get to meet the president, we still got to go through the palace which was a very cool opportunity; as well as go through the cathedral of the Plaza de Armas here in Lima.
All of us exchange students met in the Plaza de Armas. It was super cool because everyone from the Ica region was there as well- and those of us in Lima hadn't seen them in a while. Located in the center of Lima, it is surrounded by the Government Palace, Cathedral of Lima, Archbishop's Palace of Lima, the Municipal Palace, and the Palace of the Union. After waiting there for the whole group, we walked to the President's/Government Palace.
It was an incredible tour that we got. We were given the different history and stories behind all sorts of artifacts. The palace was absolutely beautiful. Not only did we get to go on a tour through the palace, but we also got to see the changing of the guard from inside the palace. We all sat inside of the different balcony's crammed together just to watch it. It was very long. They didn't just change the guard, but there was a full on show. The band performed and did all sorts of military things. It was a very neat experience. After that, we had a little bit more free time to wander around the palace. Everyone made sure to take as many pictures as possible. It was absolutely beautiful.
After visiting the Government's Palace, we went to the cathedral. Most of us were really tired and didn't really want to go to the cathedral, but it also ended up being a great experience. The cathedral was also astonishing. Decorated in gold and many other symbols. It was quite a sight. We had a really good tour guide for the cathedral as well who told many stories and the history behind all of the artifacts. Most of us made sure to give him a good tip, because we were really able to learn a lot.
