Something my host parents had planned for a while was the fun getaway we would have for Semana Santa, or Holy Week. We had school off on Thursday and Friday for our little getaway to Lurin, a desert area outside of Lima. We stayed in a vacation house of my host dad's family, and the whole entire family was there, so I got to meet some new people.
For us, my host parents brought my host sister Flavia and I, as well as Lukas, who was the exchange student who lived them first. They brought the both of us along and we both got to bring along friends. My friend Claudia came along with me, and Arne and Elias came along with Lukas. Or the Germans boys.
We left early on Thursday morning with all of our things ready to go. My host mom took Claudia, Flavia and I, and then my host dad went to go pick up the boys. We all met there bright and early, and my host parents were ready to start all of the things they had planned for the day. You'll see they took a wide variety of pictures and videos I compiled together.
We started with a few games with cups. We were split into teams of girls against boys. I think the boys collectively won. We weren't really keeping count, we were just there to have fun. From there, we played a variety of more games with cookies and balloons and whatever else we could come up with for the fun of it. We ate a tasty lunch of lasagna and then had some time to chill and relax. After that we were playing soccer for a while, which was also fun. Our goals were two posts supporting the swimming pool and two buckets. we were running up and down the backyard without any shoes on, just kicking around this ball the best that we could. We didn't play well, but we did have a good time! Same with volleyball later on. Claudia and I got ourselves caught in the middle of a very fun and competitive family volleyball tournament, which was even more interesting when we played against each other on different teams.
Later on, the boys changed to go swimming and were very excited about it even though the pool wasn't even filled up yet. We didn't bring anything to swim in because we didn't know there would be a swimming pool. They got in the pool while they were filling it up, and literally got out once it was full. Us girls were just hanging out. What I was not expecting was them to get so rowdy. Everyone said to just go swim in clothes although I didn't feel like it. Flavia got in with her clothes. In a little bit, for literally 3 seconds, I found myself sitting in a corner all alone on the porch. And before I knew it, there were 3 German boys staring me down and walking up to me, and I knew exactly what they were trying to do. I tried running away but it was a little late. Just saying, after this literally straight 5 minutes of fighting and wrestling, I have no fear of me ever getting kidnapped or whatever happening to me. Like, I fought off 3 strong German boys, picking me up off the ground and trying to throw me into the swimming pool, and I basically got away. How it ended was Lukas and Elias pinning me to the ground while Arne poured a bucket of water over me. So I didn't even get that wet. But I did end up with a bunch of bruises and Lukas ended up with some scratch marks. It was all in good fun. Later on he did end up throwing me into the pool. I was filling up water balloons, and they literally tried pushing me into the pool, but that didn't work out too well, so I got picked up and thrown in head first. I was just mad because they literally threw me into a 1 meter deep pool head first. But I got over it, my head hurt but I was fine and got them back with some water balloons. They also got Claudia that time. I don't know how no one got any pictures or videos of those moments, but I definitely remember them.
There were so many other games we played with the water and balloons. Everyone had been wet at some point during the day by the time the day was over. While we were all wet, we played a final game of futbol before it got dark outside. It was also very fun and competitive. As was the whole day in general. The end up this futbol game ended up with the majority of us with bruised toes and scratched up legs. So by the time we finished, everyone was done for the day. As far as physical activity goes, at least.
We all got ourselves cleaned up for the night and ready to relax. Some family members were making some amazing music everyone was gathered around for in the living room. They are so talented and passionate about how they make their music. There was also a little dance circle many people got into, and they're all such good dancers too.
After listening to some music and having some drinks, Claudia and I were so exhausted. It was a beautiful night so we went to the roof to look at the stars and moon some and have some girl talk. We also called Kate for a little bit, who we really wished could have been there. We went back downstairs to join everybody for some food. My host mom was there making hamburgers that we were able to enjoy and help put together.
Soon after eating, the Germans were all beered up and we all had a very tasty glass of Pisco so things were bound to get interesting. We played a game called A**hole, that I actually learned from the Germans during the second Rotary trip in January. It was very fun and I was very happy because I was winning, very different from the last time I had played. Later on, I taught everyone how to play one of my favorite card games, Eqyptian Rat Screw. I love playing card games, so that was really fun for me. We played late into the night until we were all too tired, and decided to go to bed.
The day, I won't lie, was quite boring. We were all so tired from the day before. We got up to eat breakfast, where we finished eating the leftover lasagna. We all spent the rest of the morning just hanging out. Claudia and I played a game of pool and we also played some more card games together. We spent a relaxing morning together.
Before we knew it, it was time to go. We all took a last picture together in the house, and then we headed out for lunch in Lurin. We went to Rocky's and ate some pollo a la brasa, a classic. It's so simple and boring, but it's literally the tastiest thing ever. From there, we all left and went our ways. The rest of the day once we returned to Lima was spent relaxing and continuing to recover from the great time we had all just shared together.
