Very much a day that did not go as expected. But... blessed are the flexible.
I had a great set of plans for the day. I was first going to go to Spanish class, then spend the day with other exchange students after Spanish class just shopping and having a good time together, and then I was going to go to my councilor's house to play some board games. It was all set.
But, things didn't go as planned. As we were getting ready to leave for my Spanish classes early in the morning, my host dad told me that I could no longer go out with my friends after Spanish class because we had a family thing. It was ok, I was thinking there would be other times I could go out. Plus I still had other plans for the day.
So I went to Spanish class as normal, and the headed back home with my host family. I had a little time to get some things done at home before we had to leave again for our family reunion. It was a farewell party for one my cousins- who had been leaving to go study abroad in Barcelona. I could definitely understand that and having one last get together!
It was a very nice get together and time spent with my family. We at some delicious food, talked, and more. I played Monopoly with all of my cousins. And of course there was a dog a fell in love with. His name is Chichi, and he is just the sweetest and softest dog I have come across here in Peru. He reminded me a lot of my dog, Charlie, since he also has the big brown eyes that you can't help but fall into.
After a while, my host brother and I were getting tired, so my host dad brought us back home. My host mom had stayed to socialize and my host dad went back. I had a few hours to rest and recuperate before heading out to my counselor's house. I also had contact with my counselor to see if it was possible for her to come and get me, because my host parent didn't really want to drive me all the way to her house. So I tried getting some things figured out, but there's nothing that was going to work. My host parents weren't answering the phone and it was starting to get late. There wasn't a way I was able to get to her house because they didn't want to take me, my counselor wasn't able to come and get me, and I wasn't allowed to go in a bus or in a taxi. A pickle. So I settled on that I would have to spend the rest of my Saturday night at home.
After a while, my host parents finally came home. They took Jahir and I out to go eat some dinner, so we went to Barranco and had some delicious sandwiches. I think that this was there way of making up for me not being able to go out. We just hung out in the car, eating our sandwiches, drinking pop, talking and listening to music. We eventually stopped and got out to walk around Barranco. We went out to look at the beach and many other things. There was one street show going on that we watched for about 20 minutes. I was very surprised by the... dialogue expressed during the show, but it was really cool. A guy was juggling around all sorts of things between knives and fire while doing other tricks. And doing it on top of people picked out from the crowd. It was definitely fascinating to watch.
After that, we continued to walk around some more. My host dad bought my host mom and I a pair of earring, which was very nice and I appreciated a lot. We got to look at some more street vendors and entertainment that lined the tourist attraction. I had a great time with all of them until it was finally time to head home. Even though my plans for the day didn't go through and I wasn't able to do anything I wanted to, I still ended up having a great day. Blessed are the flexible.
